The Centre strongly defended the decision of demonetisation in its response to the Supreme Court and said it is not ‘sitting around’ on the issue. The government informed the court that it will not relax the ban on cooperative banks and termed the restrictions it has placed on withdrawal limits ‘reasonable.’ The government also said the problems arising out of demonetisation will end in 10-15 days.
The court, while hearing the matter, had asked the government whether it intends to allow cooperative banks in accepting deposits in the form of demonetised notes. The court said it has sought a response from the Centre by Wednesday on whether it will extend use of demonetised notes in government hospitals.
