Jio vs others: Airtel, Vodafone, Idea hit out at Jio with free data, calls offers

Finally the Jio effect is in the market. As Reliance rolled out the Happy New Year offer for Jio users, again offering them free data and calls until March 31, the existing telecom operators are getting serious about the competition.
Jio had last week announced the new offer which was basically an update to its existing Welcome offer and it gives free unlimited data, voice calls and messages to all Jio users until March 1.
The announcement has pushed its rivals to pull up its socks and update their existing plans offers. Companies like Airtel, Vodafone and Idea have released slew of plans and bundled packages to woo the subscribers. Here are the new plans offered by the these companies to match up with Jio's Happy New Year offer.
Airtel: Country's biggest telecom network Airtel has announced two new bundled packs for its prepaid customers with free voice calling with addition of  data benefits. The first pack costs Rs 145 and offers 300 MB data with 4G enabled smartphones. User also gets free Airtel-to-Airtel calls, both local and STD. Those using  non-4G handsets will get 50 MB data benefit in addition to free Airtel-to-Airtel calls across India.
The second pack is priced at Rs 345 and provides 1GB data with 4G enabled smartphones. User will also get free local and STD calls on any network in India. Those with non-4G handsets will get 50 MB data in addition to free calls to any network across India. Both the packs come with a validity of 28 days.
Vodafone: The company on Thursday announced that it will now offer double 4G data for all plans that cost more than Rs 255. In short company has halved the price for 4G data. With the new offer Vodafone customers will get 2GB of 4G data for Rs 255 against the earlier usage of only 1GB offer. Similarly, Rs 459 plan will offer 6 GB of 4G data, Rs 559 plan 8GB, Rs 999 plan 20 GB and Rs 1999 plan 40 GB. The plans have a validity of 28 day.
This is arguably the best counter a telecom company has offered against Jio until now.
Idea: Following in the footprints of its competitors, Idea too is trying hard to match up with Reliance Jio. The company on Friday announced two new monthly call plans for the users. The two packs are priced at Rs 148 and Rs 348.
The first plan costs Rs 148 and offers free local and STD Idea-to-Idea calls all across the nation. Those using 4G supporting smartphones will get a 300MB data benefit in addition to the voice calls. The non 4G handsets can also enjoy a data befit of 50MB.
The second plans costs Rs 348 and offers free local and STD calls across all networks in India along with 50MB data. Subscribers using 4G handsets get 1GB of data in addition. Both the packs come with a validity of 28 days.

Cyclone Vardah: How and why was it named

Cyclones explained: How are they named, what constitutes them and how do they differ from typhoons and hurricanes. How are cyclones named? Tropical cyclones passing over the northern part of the Indian Ocean are named by eight countries in the region, namely India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Myanmar, Oman and Thailand. The process only began in 2004, fours years after World Meteorological Organization agreed in principle to allow them to name cyclones originating in the Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea. The alphabet system is used to designate the name of a cyclone, which means the name of the year’s first cyclone begins with A. Previously, till 1979, cyclones were only given female names. Male names were only introduced in the same year. World Meteorological Organization (WMO) maintains the database of cyclone/hurricane/typhoon names. There are six lists of names used in rotation and they are recycled every six years. The names are picked from this pre-designated l...
