Paul Reiffel, officiating in the fourth Test match between India and England was struck on the head in a scary incident on the day one of the Mumbai Test. Reiffel, a veteran of 27 Tests, was struck when Indian fielder Bhuvneshwar Kumar hurled in a throw from the outfield.
Reiffel was attended immediately by England physios. He did get back on his feet but appeared to be dazed. The 50-year-old walked off the field and was taken to the hospital for a scan.
Play was delayed as he was helped from the field before 3rd umpire Marais Erasmus replaced him as the game restarted after a 10 minute delay. Reserve official Shamshuddin took over the South African’s duties in the box.
Concerns over head injuries in the cricket field have grown ever since Australian cricketer Phillip Hughes’ tragic death in a Sheffield Shield match in 2014.
