Barwell chip shop is regional winner again

It comes just months after a blaze threatened the future of the business
A popular fish and chip shop in Barwell battered the competition as it retained its title for best takeaway in the region - just months after firefighters had to put out a blaze.
Once again, Chris's Fish and Chips proved it could not do better as it took home the East Midlands title for the second year in a row at the British Takeaway Awards.
The beloved shop, which was also named as the national winner last year, was crowned at the star-studded ceremony hosted by comedian Rob Brydon at The Savoy in London.
The BTAs, which are run in association with Just Eat, celebrates the diverse range of cuisines, and judges were said to be impressed with how the shop bounced back after a fire destroyed part of their business and the family home.
The judges also praised the shop's charitable nature, its investment in staff development and their environmental policies.
Chris's Fish and Chips, owned by Strad Kyriacou, takes product sourcing seriously. Workers tell their customers not only which species of responsibly-sourced fish it sells, but also the boat it was caught on and the farm where the potatoes were grown.
Strad said: “We weren't expecting it last year and we definitely didn't expect anything again this year. It's amazing, surreal and humbling – we're just a little village in the East Midlands.
"We would like to thank our local community and all the support they given us.”
The fish and chip shop on High Street beat thousands of other outlets across the East Midlands region to scoop not only the award but the £1,000 in prize money.
Graham Corfield, UK managing director of Just Eat, said: “We've been really impressed with the finalists in the East Midlands, they've put their heart and soul into this and the passion to win this award has been on a different level.
"Chris's Fish and Chips has had a rollercoaster 2016 but they are loved by their customers for their great food, excellent customer service and commitment to the community. It was a tough choice but they are a worthy winner.”
Chris's Fish and Chips was one of the top five takeaways in the East Midlands that received the most nominations across two public voting periods.

Smartphones of the future: flexible designs and new uses

The Lenovo CPlus is a prototype smartphone that can roll up and be worn around your wrist. With Gartner predicting worldwide annual sales of more than 1.5 billion units, here a few ways that smartphone devices could evolve in the coming years. When Steve Jobs unveiled the first iPhone in 2007 (also known as the "iPhone 2G"), it broke all the codes of the mobile phone market at the time. The device caused a sensation with its 3.5-inch touch screen, which could be used without a stylus thanks to multi-touch technology. It offered Edge, WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity and ran its own operating system. The iPhone was even picked as the year's "Best Invention" by Time magazine. Little by little, the smartphone -- defined as a cell phone with a touchscreen, connected to the internet and able to be loaded with various applications -- took over from more basic flip-phone handsets with limited functionality. In 10 years, no other model has shaken up the m...
